QAR Optics Wins Super Lap Battle!
We had an amazing showing at The first annual Super Lap Battle USA at Circuit of the Americas! We ran our Corvette in the Limited class against a stacked field of fierce competitors including some pro drivers!
Arriving to the event having not ran COTA in 3 years was very intimidating. The last time we were here I ran my 72 nova and to be honest that car doesn't come remotely close to what the corvette is today. Seeing some friends over the years run this track I kinda had an idea of what kinda time I was capable of running but you never really know till you get on track!
Day one: First session went surprisingly well. Ran a few laps and as I went back to my garage I sew the time I had ran was good enough for the class lead! I knew we had lots of time on the table and was excited to get back out there for session two. My first hot lap I dropped 3 seconds! I was completely shocked at how much time i shaved on that lap and went around for another. Approaching the back straight shifting from 4th to 5th gear I hear all types of bad noises and the car over revs. I knew I had broke something, so I park it off track and wait for the tow truck.
After a quick evaluation we realize we destroyed the prop shaft and head over to Calvo Motorsports to fix the car. We had came all this way to not fix the issue. After of 8 hours of thrashing on the car we get it fixed and ready to race for day two. I start off day two still in the lead. I really was shocked no one had out ran my time. First lap of session one I drop another half second and had a pretty comfortable lead of just over a second over p2.
The car was back and I knew if I didnt start picking up the pace my competition would soon start closing the gap. Session two was kinda a bad session for me. the first lap wasnt a very fast lap being stuck behind traffic and the second lap someone puked oil in front of me. So on to session 3. For some reason I couldnt put a lap together in session 3 and sure enough I get jumped for the lead. So now Im in P2 with one session left and then the battle lap...
I knew I had time and where it was I just need to string it all together. I go out and drop another second and take the lead back with a 2:19.4 I really wasnt planning on running the Battle lap and didnt think I had more in the car since the tires I was running were 2 years old and had used them at a few other events, but I had gotten the lead back!
A buddy of mine convinced me to run the battle lap so we quickly cooled the tires and brakes and got the car back into grid. For the battle lap you have one lap by yourself on track to run as fast and you can. No one in your way, no excuses just you and the track. I head out and completely destroy turn one. I had late braked it too late. I keep pushing and as I get to the back straight I look over at my timing and see I'm running 1.5 seconds faster than my previous best 2:19. I couldn't believe it and keep pushing.
As Im coming around to the final turn I see I had lost a half second somewhere but was still running 1 second faster so I tell myself im not going to take any chances on the last turn and just take it easy. Come around to the finish line and see my race number #72 shoot to the top of the leader board and a time of 2:18.5 lights up. I couldn't believe it. To see my race number at the top of one of the most iconic towers in racing and knowing that I just gave it my all and had won Super Lap Battle was a feeling I cannot describe!
I cant thank everyone enough for helping me with this win and can not thank you our customer enough for helping make all this possible. Without your help and support I cannot go out here and do what I love to do. So from the bottom of my heart thank you and cheers! This win is for you!
